Shelly Perkins Photography Update

Hello to all my friends,

Unfortunately, I am really bad about updating my blog. I'm sorry. For those of you who know me personally, you know how busy I am with my family, church, photography and school, so you know how I am always running somewhere. I have a husband who is battling brain cancer and although he has now been off Chemotheraphy for a year (YEAH!) we still have numerous doctor appointments and trips to the east coast for his cancer clinical trial survelliance.

We have three girls who range in age from college to first grade, who dance, do gymnastics and scouts and a million other things. I went back to school this year at the Univesity of Oklahoma. People want to know what I want to be when I grow up... LOL Well I'm doing what I want to do to but in addition to the arts, also I'm working on sociology and women's studies. I LOVE learning and LOVE knowledge and feel like I can never learn enough. We also help with our children's programs at our church which we love. Our church is the best in the area and always has things going on and activities to attend. My husband also started helping as a co-leader for one of our daughter's Girl Scout troops this year. All of the kids love him and I LOVE the girls having TWO male leaders.

Of course, we also have a zoo at our house. We have the most adorable Holland Lop bunny we call Sugar. She's so sweet but very timid. We have a very large dog who thinks he is my baby except when people he doesn't know come in the house. Then he shows everyone who's the boss. He's an English Mastiff and is the coolest dog ever. He hardly ever barks but when he does, WOW! We also have three cats, one of which is a Scottish Fold. He has the LOUDEST meow, especially at 6 in the morning when he wants his cat food. Plus we have two other kitties, one we rescued on the street and the other rescued from a shelter in New Year before returning to Oklahoma. Needless, to say, yes we have a zoo at our house.

So back to the blogging. So sorry for anyone who is looking for a daily blog. It most likely won't happen here but when I do blog I try to show a couple of pics or tell you about something fun we have going on. Some ask why I don't post every photo I photograph at a shoot like some other photographers. Unfortunately, I have had a couple of clients who would have rather me post all of their photos and let them keep the images without paying me for my work. This is my business and this is how I help to support my family. I am not a weekend warrior with a camera. I pay for insurance, professional photographer's dues and money to keep my sites up and running. This is what I do to pay for my children's food and clothing and our house payments. As boring as it sounds, for some reason the electric company won't just post some electricity online so I can use for a while and share it with others without paying for it. ;0)

Please know if you have our family photograph your family, we will provide you with the best service ever. We want to create beatiful images which you will proud to show off and save for future generations of your family. This Christmas season we are LIMITING the number of our photo shoots. Once your family deals with a life threatening illness, you tend to look at things differently and being TOO BUSY to spend Christmas time with my family is HIGH on the don't do list.

We're looking forward to next year and the many great things we have in store for our customers. We have some really AMAZING EVENTS taking place if you have children or grandchildren, you will NOT want to miss.

Thanks for spending your time reading my blog... I apprecaite your time, more than you'll ever know. God bless, Shelly

I just wanted to share some love today. I love babies. I love sleeping babies. (Afterall, who doesn't LOVE a sleeping baby... LOL). Seriously, babies represent all things that are new and good. Babies are God's way of reminding us that we are special and we have a purpose here on Earth. Hug your babies, big or little, today. They grow up so fast.
God bless,

Horsin' around in Kauai ~ Shelly Perkins Photography

Okay, if you know me, you know I have a thing for horses. I just love horses. I have owned horses, but we currently live in the city and I'm pretty sure my homeowners association would not appreciate me having horses in my backyard.

In February my husband and I were blessed with a trip to Kauai, Hawaii. It is known as the healing island. We have now been to four of the islands and plan on returning again.

On an afternoon drive through the mountains and lush gardens of Kauai we found these horses. I yelled at my husband to stop the car and immediately jumped out. We were driving a convertible and I can't really remember if I just jumped out or actually used the door. Anyway, I ran up to the horses and just fell in love. One fella really enjoyed me petting him and everytime I went to another horse, well he followed along and was a little jealous. He had some adorably large ears, may have been part donkey, I'm not sure, but gosh he was the neatest guy. I have an image that I shot that day of my new horse buddy. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making the image that beautiful afternoon in Kauai.

Guthrie's Beautiful Saint Mary's Catholic Church by Shelly Perkins Photography

When returning home from a trip to Stillwater, I decided to take a drive through historical old town Guthrie. I love shooting photos in Guthrie. It's a beautiful town and some of the nicest people live there. Well, if you don't know me, I will have to tell you, I am always drawn to churches and temples. Wherever I go, I always find a church to stop in or shoot a photo of. I found the gorgeous traditional brick Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Guthrie. The sky was beautiful, only a few clouds in sight and I knew I had to make an image of St. Mary's. I hope you enjoy the image of the church. If you ever are driving through Oklahoma, pull off of I-35 and take a drive through Oklahoma's first capitol. You will not be disappointed.

MY BLOG

MY BLOG

This is MY BLOG. I post MY PHOTOS here and information I think may be relevant to MY FRIENDS & MY CLIENTS.

Many people can take great photos, regardless of the fact they are professional photographers or not (professional meaning, people pay them money for their time, skills and talent). Many people do not realize the amount of both time and money which is spent to become a professional photographer and the high cost of continuing education. I have several good friends who are photographers throughout the state and country and we try to educate others on the importance of hiring a professional photographer. I believe a person should do his or her homework before hiring a professional "anything."

This is MY BLOG. If you have a talent or believe you take great photos, make a blog, make up a Facebook page or show it off. However, everyone should have respect for others. When someone has a blog for their family or business, it's their page to "toot their own horn." I enjoy looking at other's work and I ALWAYS RESPECT others and their talent. Life is too short to be critical of one another. We should encourage each other and treat each other with respect. It's too bad not everyone in the world feels the same way as I do.

If you would like to contact me, please email me with your correct email address or phone number and we can share stories. Have a great day. :0)

Kara & Bobby's Engagement Photos by Shelly Perkins Photography

I have to say I am so blessed to have met these two great people who are Oklahoma teachers. Kara and Bobby make the cutest couple and I can't wait to photograph their wedding this winter. Kara was my youngest daughter's kindergarten teacher. During her kindergarten year, she was on homebound after an intensive cranial surgery. Miss Kara helped our little Kate so much and kept her right on track. She holds a very special place in our heart.

With the sun setting and the wind blowing, we made some beautiful images for them to remember this important time in their lives. I wanted to share one of my favorite images from that evening. God bless you both, Kara and Bobby.

Butterfly Baby by Newborn Baby Photographer of Oklahoma Shelly Perkins

Meet Butterfly Baby Gracie. Isn't she the most precious little newborn? We had so much fun making these images. She was so content and peaceful, just sleeping away, all snugly in her little nest. It was very, very warm outside that afternoon, perfect weather for little Miss Gracie. I love when parents let me go with an idea and run with it. When given the time and opportunity, many wonderful pieces of art work can be made.

Newborn photos are best when taken the first ten days of life. During this time infants are still accustomed to being inside the womb. They will move and bend just about any way you put them. Once their little arms and legs have experienced freedom and they realize they can stretch out, forget it. Nine months couped up is just about enough for them.

Little Miss Gracie is from Hennessey, Oklahoma and these photographs were made on a very hot afternoon in Enid, my hometown. Although I live in the Oklahoma City area, I travel all over the state and just about anywhere you have your mind on taking portraits. If you have an idea or a really cool location for baby photos or senior pictures, let me know. We'll make something which is unique to you. Just like newborn baby photos, high school seniors pics are another event you want to freeze in time with a professionally made portrait. No matter who you choose to photograph these most special times in you and your child's life, remember to choose a photographer with the experience and who belongs to the PPA, Professional Photographers of America. Don't just trust this moment to the new kid in town with an expensive camera. I hope you enjoyed the image of Butterfly Baby.

Engagement Photos in Norman, Oklahoma by Shelly Perkins Photography

What a great day I had meeting Diana and Chris from Norman, Oklahoma. I had a fun afternoon running around the campus of OU, the University of Oklahoma, photographing their engagement photos. They are a super fun couple and were up for just about anything. I'm looking forward to photographing their wedding in Norman too. I wanted to share one of the images from our engagement shoot. I just love this building and it's architectual style. Norman has a lot of great things to offer residents and toursits alike. (Oh and go Sooners.... LOL)

Professional Photographers

Just returned home from a great photography seminar led by a friend and fellow photographer, Dawn. She did such a great job sharing her talents with the other professional photographers. It just goes to show you that you can never learn or practice too much. Professional photographers spend a lot of time and money to continually learn and improve their craft.

Photography is an ever evolving art media. Photography is so popular right now with the many innovative products, all which include a camera. We are at a time when we have so many tools to make an image. Photographers can choose from beginner digital cameras, cell phones and kid cameras to high-end digital cameras - which are now priced where an average Joe can charge one on the credit card and take home the same day.

No matter who you choose to shoot your child's senior portraits or baby's first photos, make sure you do not let the moment pass without a professional photograph. I'm so afraid there will be a generation of kids and all of their lives' most important moments will be documented on a cell phone and uploaded to Facebook but never saved onto professional archival print paper or disk. What a sad discovery for that child when the moment has already passed and it's too late.

Just remember to stop and smell the roses. Stay awhile and enjoy the view. Life is short. Choose a professional photographer. Make your story live through images by Shelly Perkins Photography.

Baby & Children Photography in Moore, OK

I absolutely love what I do. I love that I get to meet people and the little ones who are most special in their lives. I love babies. I love seeing their eyes light up and watching how they look at their mommies and daddies. There is such a short time when babies are babies. Capture that moment and preserve it before it is gone. The first year of life is so precious. Give me a call to discuss what kind of photography you love and how you want to record this special time. 405.229.2671.

Children's Photography Art for their Bedroom

I love being asked to visit someone's home to make a special piece of photography art to be hung in a child's room. It is an honor to make an image which will be a part of what the child sees as he or she is growing up. When shooting in a child's own environment I can capture a his or her true personality and spirit. I love being able to use their favorite toys or bed and the fabrics that already exist. This will compliment the photograph and makes the portrait very cohesive and pleasing to the eye.

This is a portrait of little Elizabeth from Texas. I have created a portrait to be hung in her bedroom. I captured Elizabeth's beautiful eyes which draw you into the image. She is lying on her own bed and has a dreamy look on her face which truly captures her at this time in her life. I am honored to make this image for her and someday when she has kids of her own, I know this portrait will mean even more to her family.

Moving my Daughter to College

Although we have had some hard times over the past couple of weeks, losing my step-father, we have also had some wonderful things happen as well. My oldest daughter, Courtney, started her freshman year at college. I'm so proud of her. Her father and I helped her move. Wow, I didn't know one teenager would need so much stuff.

I'm so proud of her and at the same time, I am still astonished that the time has gone so quickly. I look at her baby pictures and think "What happened? How can she already be starting college?" I'm glad I've been able to record so many moments on film so she may share these images with her children. I believe when we make a portrait, we are recording a moment in time. We are preserving a memory and recording a life lived. Time goes by so quickly and just as my daughter is growing up, your children will too. Make an appointment with a professional photographer, whether it is me or another photographer, to have a portrait made of your child. It will be something that you will treasure for all of your life.

Goodbye to my Step-Father

I'm sorry I haven't updated in a while. My step-father passed away. Our family, especially my mother, is experiencing such a loss. We had his funeral on Monday, which was a very lovely service. I know that he had accepted Jesus as his personal savior and lives in Heaven today. When we have a loved one pass away, it's hard to let them go. However, we can find comfort in knowing they are no longer in pain and are walking streets of gold with our heavenly father. When we make portraits of our family and friends we have reminders and memories of the times we cherish and can pass these on to future generations. I'm glad that I was able to make a portrait of my mother and my step-father.

It is an annual event where all professional photographers from around the state get together to compete in a print competition, attend classes from world famous photographers, see the latest and greatest photography gadgets at the trade show and enjoy the company of other photographers from around the state. Scott, my husband, was able to attend the banquet with me. It was lots of fun and somewhat like the Academy Awards for the professionals competing. I purchased some amazing new photography products and software which I can offer to my customers and friends. I always try to stay on top of the latest and the greatest so I can offer the hottest trends. However, I will always be true to my style and will always offer traditional portraiture as well as some funky and fresh photography as well.

Baby Emma from Texas by OKC Baby Photographer Shelly Perkins Photography

I just returned from a quick trip to the Dallas area for a photo shoot with one month old, Baby Emma. I just had to share a glimpse of her. She's such a beautiful baby and I feel so blessed to have photographed her.

Newborn babies change so quickly and the best time to get these little squishy, sleepy baby portraits is the first ten days after they arrive on Earth. Although Emma is a month old, she cooperated, slept and made some great expressions for us to capture. When we are on location, we like to record at least a few images in their rooms or space they share with their siblings. These become very special images because this is their room and their special place to be a baby. When Baby Emma grows up she will be able to see the room where she slept as a baby and learn more about herself. Every family should invest both money and time into their baby's first portrait. This time goes by so quickly. Don't forget to capture this special time before it's too late.

POPS with Pops by Shelly Perkins Photography

If you live in this great state of Oklahoma or are fortunate enough to travel through, I must suggest you head out to old Route 66 in Arcadia for an afternoon. It's only five miles off of I-35, so you can make a quick stop and get back on the interstate if you're headed North or South.

My husband and I had a great family day with two of our daughters and my father at Pops. The girls said let's take "Pops to Pops today!" What a great idea. I know I'm sounding like a commercial right now, but it's a great place to grab a good ole' burger at a good price and have some fun with the family. There are so many types of sodas to choose from (Yes, I said Soda...living in New York for a time keeps the 'Soda' word in my vocabulary. LOL) Of course you can't take a trip without taking the infamous tourist photo in front of the 60 foot soda pop bottle, so don't forget your camera.

After you have a meal at Pop's, head a little farther East on Route 66 to check out the Round Barn. My kids loved standing in the middle listening to their voices echo. Downstairs is a little museum with an old timer who is pretty interesting to speak to and will share stories of the old round barn if you just ask. This summer is going by so quick and I want to make memories with my children they will remember.

VBS Photos this Week

Wow, what a busy week I've had. My husband and I helped with our church's VBS services this week. We had so much fun. I was so blessed to shoot tons of candid photos of the kids and cute little headshots of each child, which they used in a craft to give to their parents. There were so many adorable little faces.

I've been so busy that I haven't had time to update my blog. It's sure not from lack of photography work but lack of time to get to the blog and show off some of the cute faces that I have been able to photograph. I will post photos in the next few days. Have a great weekend everyone.

Happy Independence Day from Shelly Perkins Photography

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Independence Day! I hope you enjoy this Fourth of July. I would like to thank all the military, police, firefighters, EMT's and all those that work to protect our great country. Thank you for fighting for the freedoms that we all enjoy. Thank you also to their families and the many sacrifices that are made.

I am so fortunate to live in this country, to be able to worship God and walk the street without hiding my face or wearing a burka. I'm so lucky to be able to pray, anytime or anywhere. I can pray in public, before having our meal. I'm so lucky to be able to choose to marry my husband and not be required to marry for a dowry or an arranged marriage. I'm so thankful to live in this great country we call America. God Bless America.

Just wanted to share an image I made last year at Niagara Falls. We spent time in New York and were in Niagara Falls over July 4th weekend. Everyone have a safe day and spend it with those you love.
